What’s your name and what do you coach?
I’m James Andrew. I coach both 1-to-1 clients and group classes at The Unit.
What’s your background in fitness or sport?
I’ve loved sport for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I played as many sports as I could, with a particular focus on rugby and football as I got older. My passion for fitness really took off when I was 15 — I started training in the gym to support my rugby performance, and I’ve been hooked ever since.
What’s your favourite movement or workout — and which one do you love to hate?
My favourite movements are pull-ups and dips — simple, tough, and effective. The one I love to hate? Definitely barbell thrusters…
Give us a fun fact people might not expect about you.
I’m absolutely terrified of birds — chickens, ducks… most of them, really!
What do you eat after a tough session — and what’s your ultimate cheat meal?
Post-training, I usually go for scrambled eggs on toast with plenty of salt and pepper — quick, easy, and tasty.
Ultimate cheat meal? Probably a kebab, or a pizza… actually, maybe both.
describe your coaching style in three words?
Energetic. Clear. Encouraging.
What’s one gym myth you’d love to see disappear?
That lifting weights is only for bodybuilders. I hear “I just want to tone up, not get bulky” far too often — the truth is, strength training is one of the best things anyone can do, regardless of their goal. It’s for everyone.
What made you want to become a coach?
I began coaching while studying Sport Science at university. It was a natural fit — my studies, my passion for fitness, and my enjoyment of working with people all came together. As cliché as it sounds, I genuinely love helping others discover how rewarding fitness can be.
What’s your favourite part about coaching at The Unit?
Without a doubt, it’s the people. Every day I get to coach a diverse range of individuals, all training for their own reasons, yet united in the same space. Being part of their journey is something I don’t take for granted. I’ve also made some amazing friendships through The Unit — people I get to coach, train with, and spend time with outside the gym.
