What’s your name and what do you coach?
Hi, I’m Jamie. I’ve been coaching at The Unit for over two years now, mainly taking evening classes across a variety of formats.
What’s your background in fitness or sport?
I spent five years in the Army, so training and discipline have been a big part of my life from early on. I’ve also been a member of The Unit for over ten years.
What’s your favourite movement or workout — and which one do you love to hate?
I enjoy most weightlifting movements and any workout that involves heavier weights. But if I had to pick a least favourite, it’d be handstand push-ups and dumbbell box step-overs.
Give us a fun fact people might not expect about you.
Two of my biggest achievements happened just three weeks apart this year — I became a dad to a baby girl and completed a 100km ultra marathon.
What do you eat after a tough session — and what’s your ultimate cheat meal?
Post-workout, I’ll usually have a protein shake followed by a high-protein meal. For a cheat meal, it’s got to be birria tacos to start, a tomahawk steak with frites for the main, and carrot cake for dessert.
What’s your coaching style?
I lead by example — I’m direct, but easy-going. I aim to keep sessions effective and enjoyable.
What’s one gym myth you’d love to see disappear?
That lifting heavy is just for men. Some of the strongest people in our gym are women.
What made you want to become a coach?
After training at The Unit for over a decade and being part of the community, I wanted to give back. I love helping people, teaching, and seeing everyone progress.
What’s your favourite part about coaching at The Unit?
The community. I know nearly everyone in the gym as a friend — it’s always a good vibe. Plus, the programming and equipment are top-tier. It’s the best facility in the area.
