COACH CHRIS

What’s your name and what do you coach?

Hey, I’m Chris — Head Coach and Owner here at The Unit. You’ll find me on the floor most days, whether it’s leading our morning or evening group sessions or coaching 1-on-1. This place is my second home.

What’s your background in fitness or sport?

Sport’s been in my blood from day one. I grew up playing everything from rugby and cricket to squash and athletics. As a proud South African, rugby took centre stage. I was fortunate to represent the Barbarians, England Counties, and the Samurai International 7s.

What’s your favourite movement or workout — and which one do you love to hate?

I’m a big fan of power cleans and any kind of barbell complex — give me a bar and I’m happy. I don’t really hate any movements. I pride myself on turning the ‘least liked’ exercises into something people actually look forward to… with a bit of coaching magic.

Give us a fun fact people might not expect about you.

When I was 8, I found a real-life penguin in my garden. True story. Also, my nickname is “Bongo,” given to me on a rugby tour at age 12 — and it’s stuck ever since.

What do you eat after a tough session — and what’s your ultimate cheat meal?

Post-workout, it’s usually whatever I’ve prepped for the day — something solid with protein and carbs to refuel. As for cheat meals… nothing beats a full-blown braai (BBQ). Every meat and side dish you can imagine, cooked over open flames — that’s the dream.

What’s your coaching style?

Positive, clear, and always relatable. I aim to connect with people on their level, whatever their experience or background, and help them push toward their goals in a way that feels achievable and fun.

What’s one gym myth you’d love to see disappear?

“You need to be fit before you start going to the gym.”
Not true. Just show up — we’ll take care of the rest.

What made you want to become a coach?

Coaching has always come naturally to me. From leaving school, I knew I wanted to help people grow and unlock their potential. Watching clients discover joy in training — and watching that turn into lasting change — is hands down the most rewarding part of the job.

What’s your favourite part about coaching at The Unit?

The people. The community we’ve built is incredible — members have become lifelong friends. And let’s be honest… our social events aren’t too bad either!
